Research has shown that the numbers of micro-organisms, such as beneficial bacteria in normal soil increases by up to 1000 times once the soil has been ingested and has passed through the guts of the earthworm. The actual numbers of soil-benevolent bacteria in soil due to the presence of earthworms can exceed 2 500 000 per gram in over 100 different soil types – “Earthworms in Australia” – David Murphy.
This means, therefore, that the earthworm is the only creature on the planet whose waste product is 10 times more enriched than its input. i.e. what comes out the back end is far higher in beneficial nutrients than what goes into its mouth!
It has also been discovered that any pathogens or toxins that the earthworm cannot digest are encapsulated and ‘sweated’ out from pores located on their back, and thus rendered harmless in the environment - eg. nuclear waste in Chernobyl as stated by Hennie Eksteen www.affmech.com. |
